  • Finding his niche "Moss point Tiger"

MOSS POINT --Wide receiver Kevin Barkley is making the most of his second chance at Moss Point.

Barkley missed the last three games in 2006 after getting into a violent fight. The incident involved one of Barkley's cousins, whom he defended..

The time away from the game allowed Barkley to grow and develop both as a player and person. He returned to school and rejoined the team..

"At first, it didn't look like I would be getting a second opportunity to play at Moss Point," Barkley said. "I learned that I have to think before I react. I also realized that it's not about me. I went to alternative school. I missed out on stuff. I had to get my act together. My attitude was real, and I changed it.".

Barkley credits Tigers coach Jerry Alexander for helping him through the difficult time..

"I didn't have anyone on my side until Coach Alexander came out of nowhere to help me out," Barkley said. "Our relationship changed after that. It went from being a player-to-coach to like my second father.".

Said Alexander: "I just told Kevin to stay focused in the classroom and weight room.".

    Starting at quarterback.

Barkley began his Moss Point career at quarterback two years ago. The senior had modest success in 2006, throwing for over 1,000 yards until being dismissed for the incident.
Barkley admits he didn't feel too comfortable serving as the Tigers' signal-caller for several reasons..

"I didn't want that responsibility of being quarterback," Barkley said. "I didn't want to play it anymore. It's very hard to play quarterback..
    "
I got hit with fans criticizing me everywhere I went in public on a daily basis. People would tell me what I'm doing wrong at quarterback. It came down to relatives telling me stuff. I didn't want to hear it. But I had to get over that.".

    Catching on.
Barkley successfully made the transition to wide receiver, forming a bond with quarterback Marchand Hall..

The two seniors developed into one of the Coast's top pass-and-catch combinations, connecting for six touchdowns..

"Marchand and I worked out on the beach in Pascagoula during the summer," Barkley said. We worked on pass routes and running plays. It's working out great for me.".

Barkley is among the Coast's top receiving leaders, producing 27 receptions for 541 yards and seven touchdowns..

"We thought that Kevin could get the ball in the open field and make plays," Alexander said. "He's done a great job catching the ball, running routes and blocking. He's a strong player and is great making yards after the catch. He can turn a 1- or 2-yard gain to 12 yards.".

At 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Barkley is the perfect size to play wide receiver..

"I'm more loose at wide receiver," Barkley said. "I don't have to keep my cool like I would at quarterback. My size and speed makes me a good receiver. It's hard for teams to cover me.".

    College bound?.
Barkley is seeking an opportunity to play wide receiver in college next year. He's also athletic enough to play cornerback and safety..

Several Division I schools are interested, including Ole Miss and Mississippi State. He claims a scholarship offer from Louisiana-Lafayette..

"I want to play college football," Barkley said. "I can play just about anywhere I want. I'm very talented and would be a good college player."
Barkley is on track to qualify academically, but must improve his GPA and ACT score..

Before thinking about college, Barkley hopes to help Moss Point win a 4A state title in December..

Choctaw casino plan embraced at Moss Point meeting
Choctaw casino plan embraced at Moss Point meeting
Thursday, October 11, 2007 By VETO F. ROLEY
    .
MOSS POINT -- The Choctaw proposal to build a casino in Jackson County found a warm welcome at a meeting of Moss Point businessmen Wednesday night.
    .
More than a dozen members of the Moss Point Business Association heard former Lt. Gov. Eddie Briggs pitch the casino proposal. Briggs' pitch was similar to the one given by Mico Beasley Denson to the Jackson County Board of Supervisors Sept. 27.
    .
Lonnie Hopkins, who organized the meeting, said businesses in Moss Point are excited about the prospects of a casino coming to Jackson County.
    . "
We want to promote the economic growth of Moss Point," he said. "Casinos mean economic growth."
    .
While a proposed casino on Miss. 57 near Ocean Springs might mean businesses for gas stations and hotels located at Moss Point's two Interstate 10 exits, Hopkins said the casino offered businesses in Moss Point off the interstate a chance to grow as well.
    .
"They will buy things and services from local businesses," he said. "Existing businesses will be able to serve the casino and new businesses will start up."
    .
Hopkins said a new casino will bring more people to the area. In his presentation, Briggs repeated the Choctaw's assertion that 2.4 million people will visit the casino with 400,000 staying off casino property.
    .
"Jackson County will be a tourist destination," he said.
    .
Moss Point Alderman Shorty Middleton said he is tired of seeing people go over the bridge to Harrison and Hancock counties and the casinos there. He said a Jackson County casino will help keep some of those funds in Jackson County.
    .
Rep. Billy Broomfield, D-Moss Point, said that if voters pass a referendum approving the Choctaw's casino Nov. 6, Gov. Haley Barbour's opposition to the project can be changed.
    .
The Mississippi Band of Choctaws want to build a $375 million casino on land it owns in the county. The 100 acres is located north of the Sunplex Industrial Park and the Ocean Springs city limits and south of Ocean Springs Road.
    .
The casino would have more than 2,300 slot machines and a 400-seat buffet. The hotel part of the casino would feature 1,100 rooms, theater, indoor and outdoor pools, and a fitness center. Developers also propose 240,000 square feet of retail space and, eventually, a 27-hole golf course.
    .
Jackson County voters last considered gaming in a 1990 binding referendum. In that vote, more than 60 percent voted against gaming
