    MOSS POINT --Inexperienced quarterbacks have a knack of shining in the state football playoffs for Moss Point..

    Quayshaun Williams became the latest understudy to excel for top-ranked Moss Point..

    The sophomore threw three touchdown passes as the Tigers beat Northeast Jones 18-13 on Friday before an estimated crowd of 5,000 at Dantzler Stadium..

    Moss Point (10-1) will host Picayune (10-1) in the 4A state quarterfinals next week at Dantzler Stadium..

    "It wasn't pretty, but we're satisfied with advancing to the next round," Tigers coach Jerry Alexander said. "We're pleased with the overall result.".

    Williams became a starter when senior Marchand Hall suffered a season-ending knee injury last month against Edna Karr. He was 13 of 20 for 188 yards and three scores, but threw two interceptions..

    "I was nervous at first to replace Marchand," Williams said. "But when you get your opportunity, you have to take advantage of it.".

    Moss Point fans can recall sophomore Kevin Fant stepping into help the Tigers win a 5A state crown in 1996 and repeating a year later..

    The Tigers ended NE Jones's hopes of remaining unbeaten against Coast teams. NE Jones beat Harrison Central, Gulfport and Vancleave this season..

    Brown, who has more than 1,000 yards rushing, had four receptions for 111 yards and a TD to lead the Region 7-4A champions.

    Jackson State's title hopes hinge on beating Alcorn Braves won last four of series."

    Jackson State needs a win over its biggest rival to clinch a berth in next month's SWAC Championship Game.."

    The Tigers (6-4, 6-2) face Alcorn State today at 1 p.m. in the Capital City Classic at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.."

    Ending a four-year losing streak to Alcorn gives Jackson State the Eastern Division title. The SWAC title game will be played on Dec. 15 at Legion Field in Birmingham.."

    "We haven't beaten them in four years," Jackson State coach Rick Comegy said. "I'm sure they're licking their chops to try to upset our apple cart."."

    Alcorn (2-7, 2-6) would love nothing more than to upset its biggest rival in the game formerly known as "The Soul Bowl." A Braves win and Alabama A&M loss gives the Bulldogs a second straight East division title.."

    With Jimmy Oliver, the Tigers have a huge edge at quarterback. The former Pearl River CC standout has thrown for more than 2,000 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.."

    Alcorn had a musical chair rotation at quarterback between Chris Walker, Tony Hobson and Tim Buckley because of injuries. Walker could start against Jackson State. Hobson, though, was the hero in last year's contest.."

    Braves coach Johnny Thomas said the quarterback quandary played a huge role in the team's first losing season since 2000.."

    The Braves must find a way to score points, missing several chances against Alabama A&M last week.."

    "We had the ball in scoring position three times in the fourth quarter and couldn't punch it in," Thomas said. "We have to take advantage of those opportunities if we want to pull off a win like this."
