Tigers rally to end Maroon Tide streak

Moss Point's Dawaiian Hutchins makes the tackle on Picayune's Wayne McMooain during the third round of the state playoffs Friday. .

MOSS POINT - The last time Moss Point won a playoff game in overtime, the Tigers beat South Panola in 1997 for the Class 5A State championship.
    .
A decade later, and after another victory in overtime, Moss Point is on the verge of making yet another trip to the state title game..

The homestanding Tigers used a stout defensive effort and a 1-yard run by quarterback Quayshaun Williams in the extra session to edge Picayune 17-10 in overtime Friday night at Dantzler Stadium..

With the win, Moss Point, 11-1 and ranked fourth in the Super 10, moves on to meet Laurel in the Class 4A South State finals in Laurel..

The Maroon Tide, 10-2 and ranked sixth in the Super 10, had a 10-game winning streak snapped. Moss Point beat Picayune 28-14 to open the season and the Tide had won 10 straight since that loss..

"This is what we expected, we knew it would be a tough, hard-fought game," veteran MPHS head coach Jerry Alexander, whose team moved down to Class 4A this season, said. "It's a typical Moss Point-Picayune game. It came down to one or two plays at the end.".

And it was the Tigers, despite surrendering a 10-0 lead, making the plays at the end..

On a third and 10 play in overtime, Williams, with a Picayune defender clinging to him, hit wide out Kevin Barkley on a nine-yard completion to the one. Williams scored on the fourth down play..

In Picayune's extra session, the Tiger defense stopped Tide standout Albert Richard for one yard on two rushing plays and then two straight passes fell incomplete..

"It's tough to take, but that's football," Picayune's Dodd Lee said. "We played our heart out, and so did they. They just made a play at the end that we didn't.".

The Tide had a chance to win in the fourth quarter, but Matt Dragon pushed a 30-yard field goal attempt just a bit left at the 4:31 mark..

Moss Point took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when Williams and Barkley hooked up on a 7-yard scoring strike..

The Tigers extended the lead to 10-0 when Jeff Loris hit a 23-yard field goal seven minutes later..

Picayune cut the deficit to 10-3 on the final play of the first half, as Dragon hit a 34-yard field goal..

The Maroon Tide then tied the game up at 10-10 early in the fourth period, when Caleb Hickman hit Drew Cole on a 12-yard touchdown toss.

Moss Point hopes rematch with Picayune

Moss Point hopes rematch with Picayune goes the same as season-opening contest Friday, November 23, 2007.

There's a lot more at stake this time. .

The Tigers (11-1) and the Maroon Tide (10-1) met in Picayune to open the season as Moss Point came away with a 28-14 win. .

Since that contest, Picayune has reeled off 10 straight wins, including a pair of playoff victories.
    .
Picayune needed double-overtime to survive against Gautier in the first round and used a second half comeback last week against Lawrence County to keep its season alive. .

Picayune jumped out to an early lead against Gautier, before Gabe Hinojosa's touchdown run in double-overtime gave the Maroon Tide a 34-31 win. .

Lawrence County jumped out to a 21-19 lead at halftime last week, but Picayune scored 34 second half points to get a 53-29 victory. .

In the Maroon Tide's two playoff games, running back Albert Richard has rushed for seven scores, with three touchdowns going for more than 30 yards. .

"They have some real good running backs," Moss Point head coach Jerry Alexander said. "The key to stopping them will be in the running game." .

Richard, Hinojosa and Drew Cole give Picayune a solid stable of backs. .

While Picayune has needed to rally in its two playoff games, Moss Point has dominated both of its wins. .

The Tigers opened the 4A playoffs with a 53-7 win over Long Beach, before beating Northeast Jones 18-12 last week. Despite the close score a week ago, the Tigers' defense limited NE Jones to just 19 yards of offense. .

Sophomore quarterback Quay-shaun Williams continued to play well in place of starter Marchand Hall, who will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Williams threw two interceptions in last week's game, but he also threw for three scores in the contest. .

In the first meeting between the teams, Hall tossed three touchdowns to Kevin Barkley, while Meco Brown added a 34-yard run. Barkley's two touchdowns in last week's win over Northeast Jones put him in the Moss Point record books with 15 receiving touchdowns. .

The Moss Point defense, led up front by Willie Packer and Jason Williams, gave up just seven first downs in last week's game. That same group will be asked to take on the challenge of slowing down the Picayune attack for the second time this season. .

The Tigers and the Maroon Tide will be meeting for the sixth time in the last five seasons. During that stretch, Moss Point has not beaten Picayune at Dantzler Stadium, losing 14-3 last season and 39-16 in 2004.
